Sony Metreon

San Francisco

The Metreon completes the southern edge of the Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade and houses 15 theaters, an IMAX theater, and a variety of technological retail venues, all connected by centralized escalators and grand staircases funneling through the atrium space.

The exterior is a combination of metal panels, colored spandrel glass, a highly detailed curtain wall, and skylight system. The structure is a steel moment frame built over an existing column-free ballroom below grade. The plan integrated existing below grade egresses from the Moscone Convention Center.

This project was completed as a joint venture between Handel Architects and SMWM of San Francisco.
